Effects of Chronic Organophosphate Pesticide Exposure on the Central Nervous System

Abstract: An index of the relative amount of chronic exposure to organophosphate (OP) pesticides was developed to compare individuals with high and low levels of chronic exposure. Results of neuropsychologic tests and computer-analyzed electroencephalographic data indicated an association between higher levels of chronic OP pesticide exposure and frontal lobe impairment.

“…The cognitive processes that appear to be mainly impaired are sustained attention, memory, problem solving, and speed of information processing (Roldán-Tapia et al 2005;Kaplan et al 1993;Fiedler et al 1997;Stephens et al 1995;Steenland et al 1994;Rosentock et al 1991;Savage et al 1988;Korsak and Sato 1977). Also, emotional deficits have been found after exposure to OPs (Yokoyama et al 1998;Steenland et al 1994;Savage et al 1988).…”

“…Literature on human exposure showed long-term alterations in neuropsychological performance. Furthermore, deficit in information selection, memory, reasoning, sustained attention, problem-solving and speed of information processing, and even irritability, depression as well as neuropsychiatry symptoms have also been reported (Korsak and Sato 1977;Savage et al 1988;Rosentock et al 1991;Kaplan et al 1993;Steenland et al 1994;Stephens et al 1995;Fiedler et al 1997;Yokoyama et al 1998;Roldán-Tapia et al 2005, 2006.…”
