Effects of chemical contaminants on blood chemistry of teleost fish: A bibliography and synopsis of selected effects

Abstract: Abstract-The purpose of this article is to provide a bibliography of publications that describe the effects of organic and inorganic chemical contaminants on serum chemistry and hematology of teleost fish with a brief synopsis of those effects. Also included is a review of "normal" or "reference" values for various blood chemistry parameters and hormones measurable in a number of fish species.

“…While hematological and blood biochemical tests are quick, reliable tools for evaluating the health and condition of fish, differences in the various indexes among species and individuals are very high (Folmar 1993). The results obtained in the current study are similar to the blood parameters of pikeperch from intensive rearing systems (Kristan et al 2012) and from open waters (Ivanc et al 1994, Movahed et al 2012.…”

“…or endogenous (e.g., fish species, age, sex, reproductive cycle, condition, state of health) impact the physiological condition of fish (Folmar 1993, Çelik 2004, Movahed et al 2012, Akrami et al 2013. A variety of diagnostic methods can be used to evaluate this comprehensively.…”

“…On the contrary, total bilirubin comes to the muscle and the liver by binding to the albumin and globulin in the serum through filtration by the kidney. In addition, bilirubin is a predominant bile pigment found in the circulation in the Nile tilapia derived from disruption of hemoglobin (Folmar, 1993). Serum bilirubin levels of fish could change with hepatocellular disease (Chen et al, 2004) and the effect of mycotoxin (Van Vuren et al, 1994).…”

“…Although histological examination did not reveal any impairment of the hepatic tissue, a significant (P < 0.01) increase in the activities immediately after pesticide action indicates a relevant damage to the cell membranes. Alanine aminotransferase is predominantly present in hepatocytes, other tissues responsible for AST enhancement are especially muscles and red blood cells (Folmar 1993). The return of ALT to control level in recovery period shows high regeneration potential of liver.…”
