Effects of Ce-Rich Mischmetal on Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of 5182 Aluminum Alloy

Abstract: This paper addresses the effects of Ce-rich mischmetal on the microstructure evolution of a 5182 aluminum alloy during annealing and rolling processes. The Ce-rich mischmetal was added to an as-cast 5182 aluminum alloy in an induction furnace, and this was followed by homogenized annealing at 450 °C for 24 h and a rolling operation. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties’ analysis of the 5182 Al alloy were characterized. The results show that the Ce-rich mischmetal could modify the microstructu… Show more

“…Many second phase particles present in 5182 aluminium alloy (figure 4(b)). The particles consisted of 66.45 wt% Al, 26 wt% Fe, 4.08 wt% Mn, 1.8 wt% Mg , 1.5 wt% Cu and 0.17 wt% Si by EDS, which were probably Al 6 (Mn,Fe) phase [25]. The centre of aluminium weld nugget was composed of columnar grain and grain boundary particles (figure 4(c)).…”

“…Extrusion and rolling are common deformation processes to improve the strength and toughness of aluminum alloys [11,12]. Jandaghi et al [13] researched rolling as a supplementary deformation process that could accelerate the microstructural refinement of the Al-Mn-Si specimens.…”

“…Aluminum alloys are used for a wide range of applications in various industries (Cayless, 1990;Hosford & Duncan, 1994;McMahon et al, 2017). The unique combinations of properties provided one of the most versatile applications, from the automotive industry (Gong et al, 2019) through the aerospace industry to beverage packaging (Kaufman, 2000).…”
