Effects of carbomer 940 hydrogel on burn wounds: an in vitro and in vivo study

Abstract: Our study has shown that carbomer 940 hydrogel is a nontoxic biomaterial, which improved tissue perfusion and decreased the area of necrotic tissue in burn wounds. Application of this biomaterial in treatment of burn injuries deserves further studies.

“…Carbomers, which are high molecular weight cross-linked polymers of acrylic acid, have been commonly used for the preparation of semi-solid or liquid formulations for topical administration (de Araújo Pereira and Bruschi, 2012; Berretta et al, 2013; Hayati et al, 2018). The carbomer used in this study (Carbopol ® 940) is composed of polyacrylic acid subunits highly cross-linked with pentaerythritol allyl ethers, and due to the presence of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, it exhibits an anionic characteristic.…”

“…Formed 3D scaffolds based on carbomer hydrogels can be used as transplants to study recovery processes at tissue injury in an in vivo experiments [19]. In general, the practical implications of this study will be the development of new biotechnological approaches for increasing effectiveness of adipose-derived MMSCs as an alternative source of adult stem cells in the injured ischemic tissue regeneration.…”

“…Carbomer or Carbopol is a polyacrylicacid polymer, which shows a sol to gel transition in aqueous solution as the pH is raised above its pKa of about 5.5 [18]. Due to their properties, carbomer hydrogels realize the potential of scaffolds of natural origin, providing a 3D structure similar to living tissue, while remaining non-toxic and non-immunogenic [19]. On the other hand, due to the ability to regulate the physical and chemical parameters of these hydrogels, changing their proportions and modifications of the components, the necessary kinetics of degradation of the scaffold is achieved, which correlates with the integration of the graft into the recipient's tissues [20].…”

“…The inconvenience of this spray preparation included a short residence time on the skin and the requirement of frequent administration. Carbomer 940 hydrogel is a high molecular weight material with good biocompatibility that does not cause skin irritation (Sahoo et al, 2016;Cui et al, 2017;Hayati et al, 2018). Carbomer 940 hydrogel also provided favorable conditions for wound healing due to its high moisture retention, sustained drug release, and good adhesion (Wu et al, 2016).…”
