Effects of calcium ions on surface characteristics and adsorptive properties of hydrous manganese dioxide

Abstract: The effects of calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) on the surface characteristics and adsorptive properties of hydrous manganese dioxide (δMnO 2 ), taking arsenic and humic acid as model pollutants, were systematically investigated. The FTIR spectra and SEM/EDX analyses indicate coordination between Ca 2+ and the surface hydroxyls (≡Mn-OH) of δMnO 2 , which leads to an increase of the surface ζ potential. Ca 2+ can facilitate δMnO 2 aggregation, as indicated by the particle size distribution (PSD) and on-line flocculating i… Show more

“…The synchronous spectrum of NMO laden with different Cs + contents is shown in The bands at 1020 and 875 cm -1 were increased with increasing metal ion content, and 13 they may be assigned to vibration of the surface hydroxyl groups combined with M atoms [34,36,37]. It was also noted that the intensity of the correlation peak at 875 cm -1 in the case of Co 2+ adsorption was very high, and other correlation peaks could not be observed.…”

“…They showed that Ca 2+ can facilitate δMnO 2 aggregation. The adsorption of carboxylate is also enhanced more significantly by Ca 2+ (Liu et al 2009). It is possible that Ca 2+ has an important role in aggregating the manganese-calcium core around the OEC of photosystem II.…”

“…It is possible that there is a direct reaction between deposit and support (Harriman et al 1988). Recently, Liu et al (2009) reported the effects of calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) on the surface characteristics and adsorptive properties of hydrous manganese dioxide (δMnO 2 ) (Liu et al 2009). They showed that Ca 2+ can facilitate δMnO 2 aggregation.…”

“…has previously shown to promote the catalytic hydrolysis of diethyl ethylphosphonothiolate (DEEP) (Bartram and Wagner 2003). As an important functional metal oxide, MnO 2 is among the most attractive representatives of inorganic materials exhibiting such a rich physical and chemical properties and wide applications in various fields such as catalysis, ion exchange, molecular adsorption, sensing and energy storage (Jiao and Frei 2010;Koivula et al 2009;Liu et al 2009;Wang et al 2011;Yan et al 2012). MnO 2 is a very interesting material because of the diversity in its crystalline structure and high manganese valence (Shen et al 1993;Cao and Suib 1994;Qi et al 1999).…”
