“…Ethylene is well known for its role in the regulation of fruit ripening in tomato . Foliar application of exogenous BRs could increase ethylene production in the fruits of tomato (Vardhini and Rao, 2002;Zhu et al, 2015). The decreased and increased production of ethylene in the fruits of d^i m and DWF: OX plants, respectively, suggested that BRs might promote fruit ripening by altering ethylene production in the fruits.…”

“…Significantly, we found that BR levels were closely related to the accumulation of phytoene, phytofluene, b-carotene and lycopene (Table 5). Foliar application of exogenous BRs and ectopic expression of a BZR1-1D transcription factor in BR signalling could enhance carotenoid accumulation in tomato Zhu et al, 2015). Therefore, BRs are actively involved in the regulation of fruit carotenoid metabolism and manipulation of BR biosynthesis, or their signalling is a potential approach to improve fruit quality in tomato.…”

“…However, with the exogenous application of brassinosteroid, there was reduction of the vitamin C content compared to control, at field assay to white fruits (20.71%), pink fruits (34.03%) and red fruits (26.09%) (Figure 2), while to postharvest assay white fruits with brassinosteroid treatment showed a 31.47% increase in vitamin C content compared to control. Similarly, in tomato fruits, considered a model of climacteric ripening, Zhu et al (2015) observed an increase in ascorbic acid in fruits treated with brassinosteroid in the initial storage period, relating the brassinosteroid to the fruit quality maintenance. However, ethylene treatment showed that in red fruit, vitamin C content increased 20.66% compared to control in post-harvest assay (Figure 2).…”

“…In addition, regarding cv. MicroTom, this cultivar is a stunt brassinosteroid-deficient mutant (Martí et al, 2006), and the inhibition of brassinosteroid biosynthesis delays ripening and ethylene production in tomato fruit (Zhu et al, 2015). Therefore, the genetic background of MicroTom might alter the metabolic responses during fruit ripening.…”
