A study was undertaken to examine the morpho-physiological alterations under different concentrations of 28-homobrassinolide (HBL) in two contrasting varieties of . Sterilized seeds of (T-44 and PDM-139) were inoculated with specific Rhizobium and allowed to grow and then 14 day old seedlings were exposed to different concentrations (0, 10, 10, or 10 M) of HBL and allowed to grow under natural environmental conditions. At the 15 and 21 day stage, plants were harvested to evaluate various parameters. Results clearly indicated that growth bio-markers, accumulation of proline and activities of various antioxidant enzymes increased significantly in T-44 at a later stage of growth in the presence of HBL whereas, 10 M showed the most promising response. It is concluded that HBL modifies the physiological functions and biochemical metabolism of by increasing photosynthetic efficiency at an early stage of growth and antioxidant system in T-44 at a later stage of plant growth that are manifested in growth at later stages. It is believed that increased accumulation of proline and enhanced antioxidant system provide strength to the plants to withstand environmental cues.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of foliar application of Ascophyllum nodosum extract, homobrassinolide, and triacontanol for improving fruit retention, yield, and quality in mango. Methodology: The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 10 treatments, comprising Ascophyllum nodosum extract (1000, 3000, and 5000 ppm), homobrassinolide (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 ppm), triacontanol (1, 3, and 5 ppm), and water as control. Treatments were foliar sprayed at panicle initiation, pea, and marble stages of fruit growth. Observations were recorded on flowering, fruiting, yield, and fruit quality parameters. Results: All the treatments of Ascophyllum nodosum extract and triacontanol exhibited significant improvement in fruit retention, fruit weight, yield, and fruit quality parameters over control. However, 3000 and 5000 ppm Ascophyllum nodosum extract treatments outperformed all the treatments of triacontanol. Plants sprayed with 5000 ppm Ascophyllum nodosum extract recorded the maximum value for fruit retention (48.15, 36.74, 29.48, and 25.76% at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks after pea stage, respectively), number of fruits (133.25 per tree), fruit weight (188.84 g per fruit), and yield (25.16 kg per tree), whereas the lowest values were recorded under control. With respect to fruit quality, 3000 ppm ANE produced the fruits with the highest TSS (19.62 °B), whereas the highest TSS/acid ratio was recorded with 5000 ppm ANE (62.29) treatment. Interpretation: In mango, foliar application of Ascophyllum nodosum extract (3000-5000 ppm) thrice at panicle initiation, pea, and marble stages of fruit growth is effective for reducing fruit drop and enhancing quantum and quality of produce.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are considered as the sixth group of plant growth regulators with significant growth promoting activity in many horticulture and agriculture crops. This phytohormone was discovered from the pollen of Brassica napus L. on the basis of their ability to promote growth. Currently, more than 70 BRs have been isolated from different plant species, but only three viz., Brassinolide (BL), 24-Epibrassinolide (EBL) and 28-Homobrassinolide (HBL) are found to be the most biologically active forms and extensively used in various crops. They are eco-friendly, effective at very low concentration, cost effective and almost always have synergetic effect when interacts with other phytohormones. Owing to diverse physiological roles and cross talk with other hormones influence on plant growth and development, they are being collectively referred as ‘pleiotropic phytohormone’. Although, BRs were discovered towards the end of twentieth century, but the dynamic applications and outcomes were reported mainly during the inception of twenty first century, hence BRs were termed as ‘hormone of the twenty-first century’. The application of BRs at different growth stages have been reported to positively influences such as nutrients uptakes, growth, yield and quality attributes on many fruit crops which includes tropical, sub-tropical and temperate fruit crops at very low concentrations have great roles in terms of growth, yield, fruit quality and stress tolerance mechanisms, which results to lucrative adventure of farming community. This review article will provide an elucidated insight into the application of BR in different fruit crops.
