“…However, by changing the environment surrounding HIV in the human body, the emergence of an aberrant strain of HIV can be controlled and anti-virus activation by antibodies in the human body can be enhanced. Also, by activating mechanisms in the human body such as cytokine and chemokine, anti-HIV effects may emerge (Cocchi et al, 2000;Detheux et al, 2000;Ferbas et al, 2000;Gong et al, 1998;Kaneko et al, 1999;Kurashige et al, 1999;Ono et al, 1990;Rininger et al, 2000;Smolarz and Skwarek, 1999;Zhao et al, 1999). For the moment, we think that point (2) is the most likely mechanism.…”

“…Wei (2003) reported that cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells collected from patients treated with astragalus root produced higher amounts of IFN-␥ and IL-2, which are recognized as Th1 cytokines. It was also demonstrated that AR specifically increased the production of IL-2 and IFN-␥ as well as the overall cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes from mice treated with a carcinogen called BBN (Kurashige, 1999). Gyokuheifusan of which AM is main component, significantly increased the production of IFN-␥ released by Ova-treated splenocytes to a much higher level (Fang, 2005).…”

“…Among the plants, Astragalus membranaceus markedly stimulated murine spleen cells to proliferate and suggested to be used clinically for the modulation of immune responses. Kurashige et al (1998Kurashige et al ( , 1999 studied the effects of a Chinese herbal drug named Shikaron and Astragalus Radix extract as the main component, on carcinogenesis, NK cell activity and the cytokine production of lymphocytes in mice treated with a carcinogen N-butyl-N -butanolnitrosoamine (BBN). They found a significantly lower incidence of urinary bladder carcinoma in mice treated with either 200 mg/kg/day of Shikaron or 10 mg/kg/day or more of Astragalus extract.…”
