Effects of an Extended Version of the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment on Voice and Speech in Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract: LSVT-X successfully increased vocal SPL (which was consistent with improvements following traditional LSVT), decreased perceived voice handicap, and improved functional speech in individuals with PD. Further large-scale research is required to truly establish LSVT-X efficacy.

“…These findings support the benefits of massed practise as reported by other investigations. 25,26,28 In the current study, no significant differences were noted postvocal hygiene perceptually, acoustically or aerodynamically in either group, except for a perception of reduced strain in the TVT group. In contrast, physiological assessment showed Previous case study reports have documented positive changes in vocal fold morphology and function following vocal hygiene counselling alone.…”

“…4 Intensive speech therapy (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) has been shown to improve the loudness and intelligibility of speech in Parkinson's disease. 5 Also expiratory muscle strength training can reduce the incidence of aspiration. 6 Nurse specialists have a positive effect on self-reported perception of general health.…”

“…The first author heard the speech stimuli multiple times to ensure that the chosen monologue samples were representative of the speaker's natural speech pattern. The selected speech stimuli were edited to be of approximately 2 s each in Audacity software (version 2.0.5), and each utterance consisted of one to two complete sentences, similar to previous studies (Nagle & Eadie, 2012;Spielman, Ramig, Mahler, Halpern, & Gavin, 2007;Tjaden & Wilding, 2004;Weismer & Laures, 2002). All stimuli were amplitude normalized, and speech-shaped noise was added for judgments of intelligibility.…”
