Effects of an antioxidant vitamin mixture on lipid peroxidation at rest and postexercise

Abstract: We studied the effects of ingesting an antioxidant vitamin mixture for 6 wk on breath pentane and serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels before and after exercise. Twenty young (mean age 25.0 +/- 2.9 yr) healthy males were randomly assigned to either an antioxidant vitamin group (daily doses of 592 mg of alpha-tocopherol equivalents, 1,000 mg of ascorbic acid, and 30 mg of beta-carotene) or a placebo group. Exercise consisted of 30 min of treadmill running at 60% of maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) followed by 5 mi… Show more

“…The correlation was calculated for the changes in the plasma values of AST and CPK after the 50-and 80-km marches (R 2 50 ϭ 0.888; R 2 80 ϭ 0.814). inhibits the propagation of lipid-peroxidation chain reactions in cellular membranes (42) and helps to regenerate vitamin E from the ␣-tocopheryl radical (43,44). It was therefore anticipated that the AA level would decline during and after the marches, as was reported in some studies (45,46).…”

“…Kanter et al (28) show that daily supplementation with a vitamin mixture containing 600 mg oL-tocopherol for 6 weeks significantly decreased levels of serum MDA and expired pentane, both at rest and after 30 min of treadmill exercise at 60 and 90% VO2max. Goldfarb et al (62) report that rats supplemented with a 250 IU vitamin E/kg diet for 5 weeks have lower TBARS and lipid peroxide levels in plasma and leg muscles after one hour treadmill exercise compared to controls.…”

“…Alessio and Goldfarb (27) show that lipid peroxidation measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) was correlated with treadmill workload in rats. Also, Kanter et al (28) report an increased pentane in expired air of human subjects as evidence of tissue lipid peroxidation, and that the pentane concentration is increased proportionally with workload. Furthermore, Ji et al (29) show that the oxidation of GSH to glutathione disulfide (GSSG) in skeletal muscle increased as a function of workload in rats running on a treadmill.…”
