Effects of ageing on the energy balance of food‐restricted rats

Abstract: The mechanism of energy conservation takes place in all restricted animals and is very important for survival and for species preservation, mainly in aged animals in which food restriction is frequently aggravated by senescence-related organic disorders.

“…The reductions in body weight, RV weight and LV weight induced by FR are associated with the degree of caloric restriction. Food restriction, excessive intake or fasting state, change energy expenditure and body composition 25 . The reduction in energy expenditure during food restriction has been documented and represents a mechanism of energy conservation, which prevents excessive loss of body weight 25 .…”

The reduction in energy expenditure during food restriction has been documented and represents a mechanism of energy conservation, which prevents excessive loss of body weight 25 . The heart chambers were reduced in proportion to the reduction of body weight, as observed by the relations LV/BW and RV/BW.…”

“…Reduction in energy expenditure during fasting or food restriction is very well documented [11][12][13] and represents a mecha-nism of energy conservation, preventing excessive body weight loss [14] . We have demonstrated that this mechanism persists regardless of the species [15] , gender [11,16] , developmental stage [12] , pregnancy [11,13] and age [17] . We also demonstrated that this mechanism of energy conservation is rather dependent on the level of food restriction imposed [13] than on the way food restriction is imposed [18] .…”

“…A variação no ganho de peso corporal é dependente da razão entre o consumo e gasto energético. O envelhecimento promove diminuição da taxa metabólica basal (153) e como conseqüência pode acarretar elevação da gordura corporal, desde que mantida o aporte energético. Neste sentido, o aumento da gordura corporal nos animais obesos entre 30 e 45 semanas foi decorrente da acentuação do processo de envelhecimento.…”
