Effects of adsorption on detergency phenomena: I

Abstract: Knowledge of the adsorption of surface-active substances onto different interfaces is of basic importance for its technical application in washing and cleaning processes. Important parameters are adsorption kinetics and adsorption equilibria. The criteria of adsorption kinetics and adsorption equilibrium change in opposite directions with increasing length of the hydrophobie group. Equilibrium adsorption increases exponentially, whereas the diffusion coefficient decreases linearly with increasing number of CH2… Show more

“…Microscopic observation of the dynamic phenomena accompanying contact of liquid crystal phases with hydrocarbon has indicated that these structures solubilize large quantities of oil and also promote the formation of oil-rich microemulsion phases (7). This finding of enhanced detergent activity at the PIT contradicts the conclusion of some studies that washing above the cloud point is generally undesirable (8,9).…”

“…Surfactant adsorption is a primary step for the mechanisms of particulate soil detergency. These induce interfacial tension reduction, adjustment of the electrical potential at the surfaces considered as the precondition of soil detachment, and the enhancement of dispersion stability of detached particulates [34,35]. The surfactant adsorption isotherms are generally expressed based on the surface area of a dry substrate.…”
