Effects of acute moderate exercise on the phagocytosis of Kupffer cells in rats

Abstract: These results suggest that moderately intense exercise increases the phagocytosis of Kupffer cells, and that it might be induced by endotoxemia of portal blood caused by intestinal mucosal lesions resulting from acute exercise.

“…This is contrary to previous claims that monocyte-phagocyte system is depressed by CO 2 insufflation due to pH alterations [51,52]. Although it is not possible to directly prove with in vivo microscopy that the observed latex beads are taken up only by Kupffer cells, it has been demonstrated that these particles are phagocytized exclusively by Kupffer cells [53] and has been confirmed most recently with electron micrographs by Yano et al [54]. In their study no latex particles of different sizes were taken up by the sinusoidal endothelial cells of the rat liver.…”

“…It must be noted, however, that serum CK activity reflects both efflux into and clearance from the circulation. There are data in intact rat muscle that demonstrate CK efflux from muscle cells exposed to exercise [4, 7], but it is known that exercise also affects clearance of CK from the serum by immune cells such as the mononuclear phagocyte system [38]. Though the present data cannot distinguish efflux from clearance, they demonstrate a clear association between chronic exercise training and increases in serum CK activity in ovulating women.…”

“…In our experiment, a decreasing percentage of moving latex beads (i.e., an increasing percentage of adherent latex beads) was observed over a 5-min postperfusion interval. Although it is not possible to directly prove with in vivo microscopy that the observed adherent latex beads are taken up only by KCs, Widmann et al [27] have demonstrated that these particles are phagocytized exclusively by KCs; this finding was further documented by means of electron micrographs recently [28] . Our observation of increased KC phagocytic activity following warm ischemia/reperfusion seems to be in contrast to the findings of Vollmar et al [29] who suggested that prolonged warm ischemia/reperfusion of the liver depresses KC phagocytic activity; however, their observation took place some 60 min after reperfusion in contrast to our data which have been obtained much earlier after reperfusion.…”
