Effects of a New Nano-Silver Fluoride-Containing Dentifrice on Demineralization of Enamel andStreptococcus mutansAdhesion and Acidogenicity

Abstract: An experimental dentifrice containing nano-silver fluoride (NSF) and a sodium fluoride (NaF) toothpaste were tested in vitro, against S. mutans, to evaluate the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC), antiadherence, antiacid, enamel microhardness, and OCT. The microdilution technique was used to determine the MIC and MBC. Fragments of deciduous enamel were treated with dentifrice slurries, containing bacterial suspension and PBS-treated saliva. The quantification of th… Show more

“…In this study, there was no antibacterial activity against S. mutans in the Ar/F group implanted with F ions alone. Several studies have reported the use of F alone or a combination of F and Ag for dental materials to obtain an anti-cariogenic effect [ 38 , 39 ]. Lou et al [ 38 ] evaluated the antimicrobial effects of Ag and F agents against S. mutans , Lactobacillus acidophilus , and Actinomyces naeslundii and identified the components that are effective against these bacteria.…”

“…The conclusion was that Ag ions appear to be the principal antibacterial agent at both high and low concentrations, whereas F ions only have antibacterial effects at high concentrations. In another study [ 39 ], an experimental dentifrice containing nano-silver fluoride (NSF) with AgNP and a sodium fluoride (NaF) toothpaste were tested in vitro to evaluate the antibacterial property against S. mutans . It concluded that NSF, which includes both Ag and F, had a better antibacterial effect than NaF, Ag excluded.…”

“…Increasing the level of glucose in saliva affects the activity of microorganisms. Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus are considered to be related to caries and are the most cariogenic bacteria [ 11 ] because they have the ability to create a low pH environment and progression of caries [ 12 ]. Research studies show that Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus found in stimulated saliva explain better the development of caries than Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus found in plaque [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…The size and morphology of AgNPs was characterized using field emission transmission electron microscope (TEM) (JEOL JEM-2100F) (3,23). The electron micrographs showed that most of the particles exhibited a spherical shape and more than 50% of the detected particles' size ranged from 13nm to 16 nm ( Figure 2).…”
