“…Severely disabled children sometimes need an elemental diet because of some absorption difficulty in the gut. It is known that enteral nutrition induces colonic and intestinal mucosal atrophy 12 and a gastrointestinal microflora change 7 as adverse effects. Although the pathologic findings in the gastrointestinal tracts of severely disabled children after a long-term elemental diet were not well known, Iai and Yamada 13 reported intestinal mucosal atrophy in a severely disabled person after 25 years of enteral nutrition.…”
