“…The data suggest that lycopene and soy isoflavones have activity in prostate cancer patients with PSA relapse disease and may delay progression of both hormone-refractory and hormone-sensitive prostate cancer [145]. Another human in vivo study also showed that a daily diet containing four slices of a bread rich in heat treated soy grits favorably influences the PSA level and the free/total PSA ratio in patients with prostate cancer, suggesting the inhibitory effects of phytoestrogen on PSA level [146]. Although these results are provocating, further clinical trials are needed to fully justify the use of isoflavones for cancer prevention and therapy.…”

“…The importance of soy products is that they represent a way of incorporating isoflavones in the diet of populations that are not used to the consumption of the grains, such as the Ecuadorian. Soy flours, as an example, can be used in the preparation of bread high in phytoestrogens, whose daily consumption has been recently shown to favourably influence PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels in men diagnosed with prostate cancer after just one month (Dalais et al, 2004). Soy protein products may be used as ingredients in meat products, breads, beverages, soups and other foods due to the physicochemical properties of soy proteins which help conferring texture and other important properties such as water retention and gelification.…”

“…One randomized, placebocontrolled trial of 12 weeks treatment with genistein in men with early prostate cancer found no significant difference in PSA levels between the treatment and placebo groups (Kumar et al, 2004), although the authors suggested that surrogate measures were being affected by treatment. Other trials support the idea that isoflavones, even given over relatively short periods of time, can possibly slow the rate of rise of PSA, though no statistically significant conclusions can be drawn (Dalais et al, 2004;Hussain et al, 2003;Maskarinec et al, 2006;Pendleton et al, 2008 (Davis et al, 2000;Takahashi et al, 2006;Tepper et al, 2007) b. c. d.
