Effects of 1-MCP on Quality and Storability of Cherry Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Abstract: Cherry tomato is a perishable fruit due to its high rate of ethylene production and respiration during ripening. 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is known to control ripening and reduce decay of fruit by inhibiting ethylene action. In the present study, the influence of 1-MCP application on quality and storability of ‘Unicorn’ cherry tomato was observed. Fruit at pink and red maturity stages were put in the commercial plastic containers and sealed with 40 μm low density polyethylene (LDPE) film, treated with 1-MCP… Show more

“…In addition, ethylene decreased rapidly in the first seven days of storage, but then this decrease slowed down. Furthermore, in previous research [52], it was determined that tomatoes treated with 1-MCP had a lower respiration rate and reduced ripening compared to the control fruit, similar to the present study.…”

“…The physical properties such as color, shape, firmness, size, and absence of defects are the important components that determine the appearance. Color transformation, flavor changes, and loss of firmness are changes that take place during the maturation and ripening process [12,13]. The postharvest quality of tomatoes develops during the growth of the product and is dependent on several factors such as growing environment, agronomic practices, fertilization, and many other pre-harvest and post-harvest factors [11,14,15].…”

“…Peach is a climacteric fruit, and the initiation and continuation of its ripening process are accelerated by ethylene [ 7 , 8 , 9 ]. While ripening is desirable to fulfill the customers’ needs, a prolonged storage period is equally important for the marketing and distribution of fleshy fruits [ 10 ].…”
