Effects interferon-2α on seizures in corasol-induced kindling

Abstract: Intracerebroventricular injection of recombinant human interferon-2alpha (100-500 U/rat) decreased the mean effective dose of corasol inducing clonic convulsions in 50% kindled Wistar rats. This effect was more pronounced in delayed periods of kindling and was accompanied by enhancement of epileptiform signs on EEG.

“…As is known, the effect of LPS is manifested, in particular, in intensification of the release of cytokines [4]. It should be taken into account that the action of interferon 2-alpha (which significantly increases the seizure activity in the rat brain during the first 4 h from the moment of systemic administration of this agent in a dose of 1,000 IU/kg) is also associated with spectral modifications of EEG, namely an increase in the power of oscillations of the delta-and thetafrequency ranges accompanied by decreases in the powers of the alpha, beta, and theta activities [1,2,18]. At the same time, such a pattern of EEG changes indicates that the phenomenon of LPS-induced release of cytokines can only partially explain the facilitatory effect of LPS with respect to epileptiform activity.…”

“…These effects are manifested as intensification of kindling-induced epileptic activity; acute forms of convulsive disorders caused by systemic injections of epileptogens are also intensified [1][2][3].…”
