Effects and applications of arthropod steroid hormones (ecdysteroids) in mammals

Abstract: Zooecdysteroids (arthropod steroid hormones) regulate the development of arthropods and probably many other invertebrates. Phytoecdysteroids are analogues occurring in a wide range of plant species, where they contribute to the deterrence of phytophagous invertebrates. The purpose of this short review is to summarise findings on the occurrence, metabolism and pharmacological effects of ecdysteroids in mammalian systems and to draw attention to their potential applications, particularly in gene-switch technolog… Show more

“…Indeed, much as seen with Nos up-regulation, ecdysone supplementation in vertebrates results in decreased appetite, cholesterol synthesis, and weight gain, while at the same time increasing muscle mass and endurance (Lafont and Dinan 2003;Dinan and Lafont 2006;Kizelsztein et al 2009). Given these apparent abilities to switch fat cell activity from lipid storage to lipid mobilization, a better understanding of the signals and mechanisms underlying NO and ecdysone-mediated effects should provide new insights and possible uses in metabolism based disorders.…”

“…Specialists of ecdysteroid research declared an interesting spectrum of effects of ecdysteroids on mammalian organisms, such as, for example, the ability of these compounds to improve protein incorporation. Báthori [2], Dinan and Lafont [3], and Dinan [4] published indepth reviews on the effects and applications of ecdysteroids. Lafont et al [5] summarized the excretion and metabolism of ecdysone injected into white mice.…”

“…The major phytoecdysteroid present in most plant ecdysteroids-containing plants is 20E, which is also the major ecdysteroid in insects Lafont 1997). If the effects and application of 20E in animals are extensively studied (Lafont and Dinan, 2003;Dinan and Lafont (2006), its effects and application on plants is rarely studied and the importance of 20E in the life cycle of plants has not been elucidated. However, there are several evidences that 20E has not a hormonal role within the plants (Lafont 1998;Dinan 2001).…”
