Effectiveness of telephone interventions as a strategy for glycemic control: an integrative literature review

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of telephone interventions as a strategy for glycemic control in adult Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. An integrative literature review was undertaken in April and May 2011 through surveys in the Cochrane, PubMed/Medline, Lilacs and Cinahl databases. “…The use of the telephone for motivating continuous care in health is often attractive, accessible and less onerous than other forms of action. Telephone interventions based in the literature and in the humanized approach, with space for specific questions about the examination, or even to discuss the patient’s fears, can be as efficacious for the continuity of the care as personally implemented interventions, and better than static means, such as letters, pamphlets and videos 10 - 11 .…”

“…In this sense, an integrative literature review conducted in 2011 analyzed the efficacy of interventions that adopted telephone support as a strategy to promote glycemic control among adults 5/10 with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and four out of the eight studies it addressed presented statistically significant improved glycemic control. 19 Apps for mobile phones have being recently used to support educational interventions. One systematic review addressing controlled trials reports a decrease of 0.48% in the glycated hemoglobin of adult outpatients with DM2 when apps in mobile phones were used in an educational intervention.…”
