Effectiveness of nursing interventions to increase pap smear test screening

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a threestage nursing intervention to increase Turkish women's participation in Pap smear testing. Knowledge and beliefs about cervical cancer screening and barriers to Pap smears also were explored. In a quasi-experimental study in a target population of 2,500 women, 237 completed pre-test measures to inform the intervention, and an educational brochure was distributed to all 2,500. As a result, 510 women (20.4%) accepted free Pap smears. Of the remainin… Show more

“…Automated call reminders were used in another cohort study in Texas, United States of America, comprising 32,807 women for a three-year period, which also showed an increased uptake of Pap smear exam (12) . A quasi-experimental study in Turkey comprising 2,500 women and using multiple nursing interventions such as education in health, educational flyers, telephone calls, and home visits, found that telephone calls were the intervention with the highest percentage of adherence to the uptake of Pap smear exam (13) .…”

“…Despite this, Pap smear uptake amongst women is known to be poor (Bharel, Casey & Wittenberg, 2009;Akyuz & Yenen, 2013) and amongst AOD addicted women it is even lower (Chau, Chin, Chang, Luecha, Cheng & Schlesinger, 2002). As a consequence, women with a history of AOD addiction experience disproportionately increased morbidity and mortality from cervical dysplasia and cancer (Nogara, Manfroni & Consolaro, 2013).…”

“…Pregnancy is known to be a time when women who would otherwise not have access to or make contact with health services do engage with care providers (Higgins, Clough, Frank & Wallerstedt, 1995); antenatal care interactions with AOD addicted women are therefore an ideal time to offer women the Pap smear test, however often, the offer of a Pap smear is missed because of a lack of health practitioners' knowledge or skills (Bayer, Nussbaum, Cabrera, & Paz-Soldan, 2011: Guvenc, Akyuz & Yenen, 2013. The frequency of midwife-conducted antenatal Pap smear sample collection, therefore, is unclear.…”
