Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of music on preoperative state anxiety and physiological parameters including heart rate, respiratory rate and mean systolic, and diastolic blood pressure in 60 patients undergoing general surgery. Methods: The study was designed as a randomized quasi-experimental trial. A total of 60 patients were allocated to two equal groups. Subjects in the trial group listened to non-vocal classical music through headphones for 20 minutes before entering the operating theater. State anxiety was measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the physiological parameters by pulse CO-oximeter (Masimo RAD-57C, Finland). The results obtained were finally analyzed by SPSS software version 16 using chi-square and t-tests. Results: There was an insignificant difference in demographic data between the two groups (p > 0.05), but before and after listening to music, a significant difference was observed in state anxiety (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Significant differences in both state anxiety and physiological parameters confirmed that music as a non-pharmacological intervention can be used as a complementary tool in nursing care.

Effects of Music Intervention on the Physical and Mental Status of Patients with Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: The aim of this review was to evaluate the effects of music intervention on the physical and mental status of patients with breast cancer. Methods: 9 databases were searched; 30 randomized controlled trials that compared the effects of music plus standard care and standard care alone in patients with breast cancer were included. Methodological quality was assessed using the Jadad scale. Results: The results of the meta-analysis suggested that music intervention was significantly effective in lowering systolic blood pressure (standardized mean difference (SMD) -0.63, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.85 to -0.42; p < 0.00001), diastolic blood pressure (SMD -0.64, 95% CI -1.06 to -0.22; p = 0.003), and heart rate (SMD -0.45, 95% CI -0.66 to -0.24; p < 0.0001), and in relieving anxiety (Hamilton Scale: mean difference (MD) -7.04, 95% CI -9.31 to -4.78; p < 0.00001; Self-Rating Anxiety Scale: MD -7.40, 95% CI -10.28 to -4.52; p < 0.00001; State Anxiety Inventory: MD -12.40, 95% CI -21.86 to -2.94; p = 0.01), and depression (MD -7.39, 95% CI -8.35 to -6.43; p < 0.00001). Conclusion: This review provides clues that music intervention might partially improve the physiological and psychological health of patients with breast cancer.

Music has long been regarded to aid health and loss-adaptation, but effect of music intervention on cancer patients is not well-understood. The aims of this study are to summarize and describe the role of music before and after diagnosis. This review examines music intervention studies with randomized designs for patients with cancer published between 1991 and 2015 from three Englishlanguage databases and Chinese-language databases. Ten studies that met specific inclusion criteria were reviewed. Our review indicates that music intervention may have beneficial effects on emotion (anxiety/depression) in patients with cancer. More research is needed to ascertain the most optimal intervention methodology on which cancer populations or which treatment modalities are appropriate for such an intervention.2. Non-peer reviewed literature was excluded. Search strategyThe PICOS strategy, namely Population (P), Intervention (I), Comparison (C), Outcome (O) and Study design (S), was applied for a systematic search of the published articles. In our study, we established P (population) for cancer patients; I (intervention) for music-based intervention; C for comparison of music intervention with another type of intervention or untreated group; O for management of emotion changes and disease progress; S for exception of cross-sectional studies and surveys studies [13,14].
