Effectiveness of Monovalent and Pentavalent Rotavirus Vaccine

Abstract: WHAT'S KNOWN ON THIS SUBJECT: Monovalent rotavirus vaccine was introduced for infants in the United States in 2008. Previous US evaluations have not specifically assessed the performance of this vaccine under routine use. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS:Using the same methodology and covering the same time period, high effectiveness (∼90%) was demonstrated for the monovalent and the pentavalent rotavirus vaccine series against rotavirus disease resulting in emergency department/inpatient care, in children up to 2 years o… Show more

“…Previous rotavirus vaccine effectiveness (VE) studies have demonstrated that these vaccines perform well in preventing severe rotavirus gastroenteritis among US children [6][7][8][9]. Furthermore, substantial evidence has accumulated that the US rotavirus vaccination program has led to a dramatically decreased incidence of rotavirus gastroenteritis during the post-licensure era [10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…28 We conducted sensitivity analyses, which assumed VE to decrease by 10% every year from the base-case. 12,[52][53][54] Costing Direct medical costs Vaccination costs per full course was assumed at <30,000 (US$283), which included doctor's fee for medical advice and technical fee for administering (around < 3500 or US$33 per shot). Average treatment cost, /15,000 (US$142) per outpatient episode, was from a study which reported the economic effects of RVGE on families with rotavirus infected infants.…”
