The amount of MSMEs units about 99.99 percent of the overall number of business operators in Indonesia showed that MSMEs play a significant role in economic growth and development. At the same time, MSMEs cumulative contribution to environmental issues is not recorded MSMEs participation in the cleaner environment has not yet been noticed. Thus, the environmental management system for MSMes is crucial. This study is a literature review about the implementation of the ISO 14001 environmental management system in MSMEs, challenges and its future potential. The result and discussion discussed the case study of ISO 14001 implementation in Indonesia and other countries. Case studies from Indonesia and other countries showed that implementation of ISO 14001 is possible for MSMEs. The biggest challenges of its implementation is cost, the competence of employees, and resources available for the organization. An alternative for overcoming these challenges is implementing other models of EMS that is more suitable for MSMEs. The important aspects is the environmental awareness of the stakeholders and the internal and external drivers within the organization. Further studies can be done to research specific case studies of EMS such as ISO 14001 or AMEMs implementation in MSMEs. AbstrakJumlah unit UMKM sekitar 99,99 persen dari keseluruhan jumlah operator bisnis di Indonesia menunjukkan bahwa UMKM memainkan peran penting dalam pertumbuhan dan perkembangan ekonomi. Pada saat yang sama, kontribusi kumulatif UMKM terhadap masalah lingkungan tidak dicatat. Partisipasi UMKM dalam lingkungan yang lebih bersih belum diperhatikan. Dengan demikian, sistem manajemen lingkungan untuk UMKM sangat penting. Studi ini adalah tinjauan literatur tentang penerapan sistem manajemen lingkungan ISO 14001 dalam UMKM, tantangan dan potensi masa depannya. Hasil dan diskusi membahas studi kasus implementasi ISO 14001 di Indonesia dan negara lain. Studi kasus dari Indonesia dan negara lain menunjukkan bahwa penerapan ISO 14001 dimungkinkan untuk UMKM. Tantangan terbesar dari implementasinya adalah biaya, kompetensi karyawan, dan sumber daya yang tersedia untuk organisasi. Alternatif untuk mengatasi tantangan-tantangan ini adalah menerapkan model EMS lain yang lebih cocok untuk UMKM. Aspek penting adalah kesadaran lingkungan dari para pemangku kepentingan dan pendorong internal dan eksternal dalam organisasi. Studi lebih lanjut dapat dilakukan untuk meneliti studi kasus EMS tertentu seperti penerapan ISO 14001 atau AMEM di UMKM.

Organizations worldwide are now embracing different standards while approaching environmental management systems (EMS) to be environmentally and economically sustainable. The ISO 14001 EMS has captured much attention by offering efficient environmental practices organization-wide and throughout the supply chain. Human factors (HFs) are crucial behind implementing ISO 14001 EMS since research articles about ISO 14001 strongly emphasize different HFs. This study proposes a framework that solely focuses on those HFs. Influential HFs are extracted through content analysis of related literature and categorized into 5 main HFs. Opinions from experts in the relevant field about interrelationships and inheritances of the HFs are collected and converted into quantitative data. Incorporating the graph theoretic and matrix approach (GTMA), the data delivered permanent values corresponding to the main HFs and their best and worst possible values. Among the main HFs, EMS Training has been found to have the most scopes for improvement, followed by Employee Empowerment and EMS Teamwork. This study demonstrates a framework about how to assess the role of HFs behind internalizing ISO 14001 EMS and enables organizations to go for competitive benchmarking and to define and adjust goals for environmental management.

A certification in accordance with ISO 14 001 and EMAS allows the impact of economic activities on ecosystems to be understood and assessed, as well as environmental goals and objectives to be set. The effects of environmental management systems (EMS) largely depend on how companies decide to use them after certification. In this regard, the author explores issues, related to the use of ISO 14 000 and EMAS standards for improving the environmental safety of companies. The methodology is presented in the form of an environmental standardisation model and various levels of the company environmental certification. The importance of environmental education of employees and a positive organisational climate is explained. However, the introduction of environmental management systems does not always lead to improved environmental performance of companies. Some companies focus on formal criteria. Nevertheless, EMS, environmental auditing and the principles of ISO 14 000 can help companies reduce their negative impact on the environment and increase their competitiveness. In a situation of uncertainty, the organisational climate, especially the attitude of employees towards the environment and environmental values, is of a priority importance for the implementation of the EMS objectives. Problems, associated with an ambiguous interpretation of standard requirements, were identified. It is recommended to pay attention to the creation of a positive organisational climate for successful environmental certification. In addition, there is a need for a more accurate assessment of the environmental activity effectiveness with a clear formulation of the requirements to standards and a control over their implementation.
