Effectiveness of impedance parameters for muscle quality evaluation in healthy men

Abstract: We investigated the relationship between impedance parameters and skeletal muscle function in the lower extremities, as well as the effectiveness of impedance parameters in evaluating muscle quality. Lower extremity impedance of 19 healthy men (aged 23–31 years) measured using the direct segmental multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis were arc-optimized using the Cole–Cole model, following which phase angle (PA), $${R}_{i}/{R}_{e}$$ R i / R e , and β were estimated. Skeletal muscle function wa… Show more

“…Z X represents the impedance of the measured object, including capacitive coupling, whose circuit parameters differ depending on the equivalent circuit model of the measured object. For example, in the case of bioimpedance, it comprises extracellular fluid resistance R X , intracellular fluid resistance R PX , and the capacitance of cell membranes C PX [27,28]. In particular, R PX = 0 Ω for skin impedance [29].…”

“…PhA in the human body typically ranges from 1° to 12° (Sardinha & Rosa, 2023 ), and higher values within this range are positively associated with muscle strength and physical function (Cioffi et al, 2020 ; Custodio Martins et al, 2022 ; Fukuoka et al, 2022 ; Giorgi et al, 2018 ; Langer et al, 2022 ; Micheli et al, 2014 ; Norman et al, 2011 ; Piccoli et al, 2007 ; Rodriguez‐Rodriguez et al, 2016 ; Sato et al, 2020 ). Increases in PhA have been reported following resistance training programs and concurrent exercise training (Campa, Colognesi, et al, 2022 ; Sardinha & Rosa, 2023 ).…”
