“…Basal testosterone level was significantly higher in the MT group on days 49 and 71, which reflects the expected effect of long-term melatonin treatment, in accordance with previous studies (Pelletier and Ortavant, 1975a, b;Kennaway and Gilmore, 1985;Lincoln and Ebling, 1985;Kaya et al, 2001;Tsantarliotou et al, 2008;Ramadan et al, 2009). The novelty value of our experiment, apart from the breed and the weather, is the testosterone challenge.…”

“…In short-day breeders, longer dark period and elevated plasma mela- tonin level indicate the beginning of the breeding season. Melatonin triggers GnRH secretion in the mediobasal hypothalamus and thus leads to increased FSH and LH secretion, which results in an elevated testosterone response (Pelletier and Ortavant, 1975a,b;Chemineau et al, 1992;Kokolis et al, 2000;Tsantarliotou et al, 2008;Ramadan et al, 2009). These observations led to the development of long-acting (slow-release) melatonin devices which are able to stimulate reproductive activity before the natural breeding season.…”

“…It is suggested that the effect of melatonin on the reduction of unsaturated fatty acids is similar to that of vitamin E in rearranging the structure of sperm membrane fatty acids and may result in a greater stability of fatty acids to lipid peroxidation (Surai 1999). In addition, melatonin can also induce its antioxidant effects through the strengthening of antioxidant enzymes activities by increasing the gene expression of SOD and GSH-Px in the sperm membrane (Ramadan et al 2009). So increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes in rooster spermatozoa might be the second suggestion for decreasing lipid peroxidation during the storage.…”

“…For example, Angora bucks show marked seasonal variations in their libido and testicular size with a peak in autumn (Ritar, 1991). By contrast, Australian cashmere, Damascus and Rayini male goats display a moderate reproductive seasonality (Walkden-Brown et al, 1994;Zamiri and Heidari, 2006;Ramadan et al, 2009). In cashmere goats, the breeding season, characterized by high levels of LH and testosterone, as well as the emission of a strong odor, begins in late spring and ends in late autumn (Walkden-Brown et al, 1994).…”
