Effectiveness of Computed Tomography in the Diagnosis of Novel Coronavirus-2019

Abstract: Coronaviruses (CoV) belong to the coronavirus genus of the coronaviridae family. All CoVs are pleomorphic RNA viruses containing crown-like peplomers of 80-160 nm in size. This virus is a zoonotic pathogen seen with a wide range of clinical features from asymptomatic state to intensive care in humans. So far, seven human coronaviruses have been identified with the last one being Coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19). These pathogens typically lead to mild disease, but SARS and MERS type coronaviruses have caused severe … Show more

“…A CT of the chest is used as the main imaging tool in doubtful cases and is a valuable tool for supervising the changes and reflecting the severity during treatment. 9 Abnormal findings in CT can be present even in asymptomatic patients; therefore, combining imaging assessment with clinical and laboratory results could favour precocious diagnosis of COVID-19. 10 The severity of lung involvement on high resolution CT correlates positively with laboratory findings, and this provides an insight into the appropriate interval of chest CT to reduce radiation exposure and support proper management of patients with COVID- 19.…”

“…Coronaviruses (CoV) belong to the coronavirus genus of the coronaviridae family. All CoVs are pleomorphic RNA viruses containing crown-like peplomers of 80-160 nm in size (Yurdaisik 2020). The RNA genomes is up to 32 kb of positive-sense RNA (Denison et al 2011).…”

“…Various diagnostic methods have been proposed to provide a rapid response in the combat against the pandemic, each of them having a different degree of specificity and based on different target molecules from SARS-CoV-2 or the body in response to infection [ 21 , 22 ]. These methods include molecular and serological tests [ 23 ], as well as clinical tests, such as computed tomography (CT) [ 24 ], and each approach has its own advantages and shortcoming. Thus, the diagnostic methods present different performances depending on the type of the test and the stage of the disease, among other factors [ 25 , 26 ].…”
