Effectiveness of an Innovative Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields Stimulation in Healing of Untreatable Skin Ulcers in the Frail Elderly: Two Case Reports

Abstract: Introduction. Recalcitrant skin ulcers are a major burden in elderly patients. Specifically, chronic wounds result in significant morbidity and mortality and have a profound economic impact. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) have proved to be a promising therapy for wound healing. Here we describe the first reported case of an innovative PEMF therapy, Emysimmetric Bilateral Stimulation (EBS), used to successfully treat refractory skin ulcers in two elderly and fragile patients. Case Presentation. Two elder… Show more

“…Several clinical studies have demonstrated that PEMFs can effectively alleviate tissue swell, traumatic pain and promote wound healing ( 19 , 20 ). Guerriero et al ( 21 ) described the first reported case of an innovative PEMF therapy, emysimmetric bilateral stimulation (EBS), used to successfully treat refractory skin ulcers in two elderly and fragile patients. They demonstrated a supportive role of PEMFs in the treatment of skin ulceration in diabetes, which was suggestive of a potential benefit of EBS for this clinical condition.…”

“…Although many studies have shown the effect of magnetic fields on human and animal model, [32][33][34][35][36][37] further and more comprehensive studies are still required. This study revealed that EMF might serve as a potential tool for manipulating activity of cells and it opens a new investigation field valuable for future new therapeutic approach to accelerate skin regeneration and wounds closure.…”

“…More recently, a reduction of pain and wound inflammation in women undergoing cesarean surgery was reported ( 49 ). No adverse effects were observed in any of the studies ( 47 , 48 , 56 , 120 ). Although all these in vivo studies and clinical observations showed positive results, the real picture is more complex because there is still a fraction of patients that does not respond with improved healing.…”
