Effectiveness and feasibility of early physical rehabilitation programs for geriatric hospitalized patients: a systematic review

Abstract: BackgroundOld adults admitted to the hospital are at severe risk of functional loss during hospitalization. Early in-hospital physical rehabilitation programs appear to prevent functional loss in geriatric patients. The first aim of this review was to investigate the effect of early physical rehabilitation programs on physical functioning among geriatric patients acutely admitted to the hospital. The second aim was to evaluate the feasibility of early physical rehabilitation programs.MethodsTwo searches, one f… Show more

“…It is understood that muscle strength, endurance, and cognitive function are reduced by inactivity resulting from acute medical illness. A previous study investigated the effectiveness and feasibility of early physical rehabilitation, and its importance has been reported for patients with various diseases19,20,21 ) . Furthermore, our previous study showed that early start of rehabilitation was an important factor for the recovery of ADL of elderly pneumonia patients22 ) .…”

“…Studies investigating early physical training demonstrated improvements on physical fitness and on disability measures at discharge and a reduction in the number of transfers to a nursing home [12,46]. Physical training is often part of a multi(parallel) or inter(integrated) disciplinary rehabilitation approach, known under the names as fast-track or enhanced recovery after surgery.…”

“…Functional changes often occur before hospital admission due to acute illness, and a subsequent functional decline in hospital has been identified 2, 3. Kosse et al's 4 systematic review found that early physical rehabilitation for hospitalised older adults resulted in functional benefits and reduced likelihood of discharge to residential care. In addition, studies have found that dedicated older adult wards lead to less functional deterioration on discharge 5.…”
