Effective Reminders

Abstract: We study the effects of reminders on people’s behavior in investment activities characterized by up-front costs and delayed benefits, such as getting an education and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We conduct a field experiment and show that simple weekly reminders induce users of a gym to substantially increase their gym attendance over an extensive period. Users’ response to reminders is immediate (within hours) and recurrent for any subsequent reminder, which can be explained by limited attention. We find… Show more

“…For the group that focused on self-set New Year's resolutions without any additional goals, a second explanation for their unexpectedly successful goal pursuit regards the effects of the five reminders sent to the participants during the study. Evidence shows that simple reminders-analogous to those we sent-can increase performance over an extended period and even foster habit formation (Calzolari & Nardotto, 2017). It is plausible that these reminders promoted goal pursuit independent of the goal manipulation, which could have led to a suppression of the effect of the goal manipulation.…”
