Effective geometric restoration of distorted historical document for large‐scale digitisation

Abstract: Due to storage conditions and material's non-planar shape, geometric distortion of the 2-D content is widely present in scanned document images. Effective geometric restoration of these distorted document images considerably increases character recognition rate in large-scale digitisation. For large-scale digitisation of historical books, geometric restoration solutions expect to be accurate, generic, robust, unsupervised and reversible. However, most methods in the literature concentrate on improving restorat… Show more

“…e system can carry out geometric modeling and correction of arbitrarily deformed historical documents, as well as a visual display and manual operation of the grid to improve the accuracy of geometric restoration. Experimental results show that the proposed automatic deformation method can effectively correct arbitrarily deformed historical documents, and its performance has been improved compared with several of the latest geometric restoration methods, but the method lacks detailed design [4]. As the core part of the microcomputer, the microprocessor has more related research.…”

“…At this point, two related problems can be defined: baseline detection and text line extraction. Baseline detection is a substantial process in document image analysis that can be used not only to segment page images into line images but also for many other document processing steps such as skew, slant, and slope correction; text height normalization [8,9]; feature extraction; or the rectification of geometric distortions [10,11]. A baseline is a fictitious line which follows and joins the lower part of the character bodies in a text line [12] and below which descenders extend.…”
