Effective communication regarding risk of fracture for individuals at risk of fragility fracture: a scoping review

Abstract: Two scoping reviews were conducted to review recommendations and guidelines for communication regarding general health risk, and to investigate communication strategies regarding risk of fracture. Healthcare professionals are invited to apply these recommendations to optimize a patient-centered approach to reducing risk of fracture. Introduction To conduct a scoping review of the medical literature regarding recommendations and tools for effective communication between healthcare professionals and patients reg… Show more

“…Tools, such as BoneRx, which include a reminder for providers and provide education to the target population, have the potential to increase BMD investigations, may reduce fracture rates [ 50 ], and highlight the need to consider multiple components and targets when developing tools and interventions to change care [ 63 ]. Patient understanding of the risk of OP due to ADT should be confirmed by encouraging questions and the opportunity to express any concerns [ 64 ]. This will contribute to an optimal patient-centred approach.…”

“…Their level of anxiety may depend, however, on the statistical format used. When risks are described as “1 in 25”, patients perceive a higher likelihood of the risk to occur compared to when they are described as“4 in 100” [ 48 ]. Such variations in form may affect anxiety levels of patients.…”

“…The mean TBS and lumbar spine BMD decreased from 20-24 years to 70-74 years in both sexes; especially in women after 50 years of age, TBS and spine BMD showed a clear nonlinear decline (Figure 2). The peak age range for TBS (L 1-4 ) and BMD (L 1-4 ) in men was 25-29 years, with a mean peak TBS (L 1-4 ) of 1.47±0.08 and a mean peak BMD (L 1-4 ) of 1.17±0.15 g/cm 2 . The peak age range for TBS in women was 20-24 years, with a plateau at 20-39 years and a mean peak TBS (L 1-4 ) of 1.43±0.08.…”
