Effect of Zishen Jiangtang Pill, a Chinese Herbal Product, on Rats with Diabetic Osteoporosis

Abstract: Diabetic osteoporosis (DO) is a complication of diabetes. Zishen Jiangtang Pill (ZJP) is a Chinese herbal product which has been used in clinic to maintain blood glucose level and bone density for decades. However, the evidence about its mechanism on diabetes and osteoporosis is still unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate therapeutic effect of ZJP on DO in streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced rats. Rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups: one control group (CON), one model group (MOD), and two ZJP treatme… Show more

“…Previous study has demonstrated that ZJP can effectively improve glucose metabolism and abnormal bone metabolism, and regulate blood and urinary metabolism in DOP rats (Li H et al 2018). ZJP has a clear hypoglycemic and lipid-lowering effect, can improve insulin sensitivity, promote resistance to oxidation, protect the vascular endothelium, and reduce the level of in ammatory factors (Yunshan et al 2008;Yongping et al 2012).…”

“…Recently, it has been reported that certain herbal extracts may prevent bone loss and protect against diabetes-induced bone microarchitecture disruption (21,22). Cur is an extract from the roots of the genus Curcuma and previous studies have revealed that it can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in a diabetic rat model, improve islet cell function and reduce blood glucose levels (23,24).…”

“…According to international diabetes federation (IDF), there are about 425 million diabetic patients (18–99 years old) worldwide at present, and the number will increase to 629 million by 2045 [1]. Diabetic osteoporosis (DOP) is a systemic metabolic bone disease affected by genetic and environmental factors, characterized by bone destruction and decreased bone density [2,3], it belongs to secondary osteoporosis (OP). There are many studies showing that the incidence of DOP is as high as 60% in diabetic patients [4,5].…”
