Effect of Wastewater Treatment on Bacterial Community, Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and Endoparasites

Abstract: Wastewater and wastewater treatment plants serve as urban reservoirs of pathogenic microorganisms. Wastewaters frequently contain bacteria, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and developmental stages of parasites with significant zoonotic potential. Five wastewater treatment plants in the central part of Slovakia were investigated to determine the effect of treatment on bacterial community, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and the occurrence of helminth eggs. Although all monitored chemical factors (chemical oxygen … Show more

“…However, the rise and dissemination of strains resistant to antibiotics have severely challenged the efficacy of antibiotics ( Chinemerem Nwobodo et al., 2022 ). Resistant bacteria proliferate not only in hospital settings but are also widespread in aquatic and agricultural environments ( Ondon et al., 2021 ; Papajová et al., 2022 ). These bacteria disseminate their resistance genes via Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT), exacerbating the global issue of antibiotic resistance ( Sun et al., 2019 )。Consequently, the search for alternative strategies to antibiotics has become both urgent and necessary.…”

“…On the other hand, wastewater is also being studied because of the presence of many dangerous bacterial species or the growing emergence of bacterial resistance [21] and almost every state conducts wastewater monitoring.…”

“…Moreover, wastewater treatment plant weaken many viruses and bacteria during the treatment process but sometimes this is not done entirely [89] .To combat the presence of pathogens and the unexpected illnesses they may cause, several conventional wastewater disinfection methods have been employed. Chlorination, ozonation, and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation are among the most commonly used disinfection techniques [90] .…”
