Effect of voltage unbalance and distortion on the loss characteristics of three‐phase cage induction motor

Abstract: Voltage unbalance and distortion become one of the most common power quality problems in industrial utilities, which cause significant increase of the electromagnetic losses in induction motors. For energy saving of the induction motor system, there is a need for a detailed research of the loss characteristics of induction motor under unbalanced and distorted supply voltage. For accurate and fast prediction of the induction motor losses, this study proposes a method to identify rotor harmonics using the data f… Show more

“…Although the detrimental effects of a low PQ on electric motors are known, they are mostly neglected or ignored. However, some works cover both the analysis of the additional losses that are caused by supply voltage distortion and other papers address temperature rise and derating of motors under distortion [11][12][13][14]. Other works that are based on experiments usually have the harmonic content injected by programmable power supply [15][16][17].…”

“…Since electric motors consume a considerable part of the world's electric energy, energy savings of electric motor drives are a hot topic amongst researchers. Using a voltage-source inverter (VSI) as a power supply for the induction motor (IM) drive introduces additional losses compared to a sinusoidal supply [1,2] since the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the motor supply voltage directly contributes to the loss increase [3].…”

“…5 Several researches were performed to study the detection and consequences of voltage unbalance especially on induction motors. [6][7][8][9] As a result of voltage unbalance, a negative sequence current that opposes the positive sequence one is created. This current produces a negative torque that reduces the effective torque and causes speed disturbance.…”
