Effect of vitamin D supplementation on benign paroxysmal positional vertigo recurrence: A meta-analysis

Abstract: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is characterized by recurrence, which exposes patients to repeated vertigo attacks. Vitamin D deficiency has been found to be a risk factor in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, although effect of its elimination on recurrence reduction remains unknown. To determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation in preventing recurrence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo patients with vitamin D deficiency using a meta-analysis study. We searched and retrieved relevant arti… Show more

“…Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo affects the inner ear and causes frequent and sudden attacks of positional vertigo (Table 1). Risk factors include advanced age, ear and dental surgery, vitamin D deficiency, menopause, and vascular disorders [11][12][13][14]. The main role is played by the otoconia, which may enter the semicircular canal and change position with head movements (canalithiasis theory) or adhere to the cupula of the canal and displace it (cupololithiasis theory) [9].…”
