Effect of Ursolic Acid from Epicuticular Waxes of Jacaranda decurrens on Schizaphis graminum

Abstract: Ursolic acid from Jacaranda decurrens showed toxicity and feeding deterrency towards the greenbug Schizaphis graminum. Biological activity was determined by analyzing ursolic acid effects on the survival, reproductive index, and population growth rate of the greenbug. Survival and reproductive index decreased in direct proportion to ursolic acid content in the diet. The population growth rate decreased markedly when the aphids were fed on barley leaves sprayed with ursolic acid dissolved in DMSO, in comparison… Show more

“…Triterpenoids have generally been regarded as low efficient anti-transpiring barriers (Grncarevic and Radler, 1967;Holloway, 1969). On the other hand, they may exhibit pronounced anti-herbivore activ ity (Varanda et al, 1992;Kombargi et al, 1998;Sa latino et al, 1998). Xerophytes from other ecosys tems are also known to possess pentacyclic triterpenoids with anti-herbivore activity (Heinzen and Moyna, 1993).…”

“…It has been speculated that the frequent prevalence of triterpenoids in the foliar waxes of cerrado plants may be a feature selected for its value as protection against the pressure of biotic agents (insect herbivory, for example) rather than as anti-transpiring agents (Salatino et al 1998, Oliveira andSalatino 2000). Evidence that wax triterpenoids from cerrado species may act as protection against herbivore has been shown (Varanda et al 1992, Salatino et al 1998). …”

“…é uma espécie endêmica do Cerrado, pertencente à família Bignoniaceae, encontrada nos estados de Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais e São Paulo (Mauro et. al., 2007;Varanda et al, 1992). Tintura de raiz de J. decurrens é amplamente utilizada pela população como depurativo do sangue e também recomendada para o tratamento das afecções cutâneas e úlceras externas (Rodrigues & Carvalho, 2001).…”
