Effect of Urbanization on the River Network Structure in Zhengzhou City, China

Abstract: Hydrological problems, such as flood disasters, can be caused by the influence of urbanization on river network structures in plain areas. Taking the main urban region of Zhengzhou city as the research area, based on six remote sensing images from 1992 to 2015, the modified normalized difference water index method and a land-use transfer matrix were used to reconstruct river network data to study the temporal and spatial changes in the river system. In addition, the analytic hierarchy process and the entropy w… Show more

“…The amount of dispersion of an indicator was calculated using the entropy value. When an indicator's information entropy value is low, it means that the distribution is significant and has a large impact on the evaluation as a whole [55]. The formulas are as follows:…”

“…Although the AHP's operation is rather straightforward, it is arbitrary and subjective [19]. The entropy technique can account for the impact of the indicator's current value on the evaluation outcomes, which is more in accordance with objective reality [55]. In this study, weights were determined using the AHP and entropy methods, and total weighting values were then determined using the weighted average concept.…”

“…These evaluation methods include the problem of incorrect indicator selection, which can lead to inaccurate evaluation results. Nevertheless, this kind of comprehensive and systematic approach to establishing indicators has played a significant role in the assessment of urban rivers that are currently heavily affected by human activities [11]. Overall, river health is primarily based on the construction of indicator systems from four aspects: hydrology, water quality, habitat, and biology [12,13].…”

“…There have been many studies on the response of the river network system structure to urbanization [10][11][12][13][14] or the effects of land cover change on river morphology and chemical elements [15][16][17]. These studies have been conducted in the past.…”
