Effect of tricalcium aluminate on the properties of tricalcium silicate-tricalcium aluminate mixtures: setting time, mechanical strength and biocompatibility

Abstract: The addition of Ca(3) Al(2) O(6) into Ca(3) SiO(5) accelerated the hydration process, reduced the setting time and improved the compressive strength. Furthermore, these mixtures were bioactive and biocompatible and had a stimulatory effect on the L929 cell growth when the content of Ca(3) Al(2) O(6) was below 10%. Therefore, the mixtures with 10% Ca(3) Al(2) O(6) produced the best compromise between hydration and ex vivo biological properties.

“…As other researchers have reported, MTA can induce bone generation, as confirmed by the results of the current study (10, 23, 3335). Nano-WMTA was supposed to accelerate the bone-healing process, and it exhibited a better response in the bone-healing process when nano–tricalcium aluminate was added to it.…”

“…Liu et al (23) studied the formation of hydroxyapatite (HA) on C 3 S/C 3 A mixtures derived from MTA. Their results verified that the C 3 S/C 3 A mixtures could induce the formation of an HA layer on their surface in SBF, contributing to in vitro bioactivity.…”

“…Figure 6 (A) indicates that PSC-55 contained a substantial amount of C3A, exhibiting a statistically significant difference in the LDH assay compared with the other groups at 1 day and 3 days of incubation. Liu et al determined that adding 0%–15% C3A into C3A and C3S mixtures yields no significant cytotoxicity within the extract concentration range between 3.125 mg/mL and 100 mg/mL [34]. The extract concentration in this study was 100 mg/mL and, according to the results of the cell viability assay, all of the PSCs exhibited no cytotoxicity and did not influence cell function for a long period of time.…”
