Effect of transvaginal ultrasound on human chorionic villus cell apoptosis during pregnancy

Abstract: ABSTRACT. With the advancement of ultrasonic technology in recent years, sonography has become a common medical diagnostic tool, as it has elevated output sonic intensity and elongated exposure time. This study investigates the effect of ultrasound on human chorionic villus cell apoptosis during early pregnancy. Transvaginal ultrasound was performed for a total of 60 women who had undergone induced abortion at our hospital. They were randomly divided into the control, short ultrasound (10 min), and long ultras… Show more

“…However, since the early stages of pregnancy are so sensitive to any external changes [11], early prenatal ultrasound should be used with caution. In fact, using transvaginal ultrasound in early pregnancy has been associated with increased cell death rates in the developing human fetus [12]. Similarly, the use of Doppler ultrasound in early pregnancy has been associated with cell death in the liver of the rat fetus [13].…”

“…Chronic treatment with lithium or valproic acid, strong drugs to treat psychotic events, enhance the mitochondrial function via the BAX gene [23,24]. The BAX gene is not only critical in yeasts' defense immunity [25] but is an important marker related to miscarriage in pregnancy [26] and defense against cancer [27], because the tumor and the fetus may be mechanistically compared to an intruder in cancer and in pregnancy ( Figure 1). …”
