Effect of Toxic Metals on the Multiple Forms of Esterases of Triticum aestivum cv. Vergina

Abstract: The influence of increasing concentrations of copper, zinc, lead, nickel, chromium and cadmium on 14 day‐old seedlings of Triticum aestivum cv. Vergina was studied. Plants were grown in 1/10 strength Rorison's nutrient solution plus increasing concentrations of each one of the toxic metals separately. Metal toxicity depressed shoot growth but the most evident symptoms were on roots. The effects of toxic metals on the isoesterases of Triticum aestivum cv. Vergina shoots were classified into three types, dependi… Show more

“…In Lemna minor fronds and Allium cepa roots, the same enzyme induction was observed with mercury (Subhadra et al, 1991). Esterases Karataglis et al (1988) reported changes in the number of isoesterase bands and quantitative changes of band activity after treatment of Triticum aestivum with toxic concentrations of zinc, cadmium, copper, lead, and nickel. In nickel treated Silene vulgaris, a change of the isoesterase pattern was also found (Pandolfini and Maier, 1985).…”

“…Appearance of a new CXE isoesterase in Nicotiana and Lilium in response to heat has also been reported (Pandey 1973). The effects of toxic metals on the isoesterases of Triticum aestivum relied on the increase or decrease of the number and density of EST bands (Karataglis et al. 1988).…”
