The effects of feeding an 80% plant protein diet, with and without fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) supplementation, on the growth and gut health of Atlantic salmon were investigated. Fish were fed either (A) a control diet containing 35% fishmeal, (B) an 80% plant protein diet with 15% fishmeal, (C) an 80% plant protein diet with 5% fishmeal and 10% partly hydrolysed protein, or (D) an 80% plant protein diet with 5% fishmeal and 10% soluble protein hydrolysate. Fish on the 80% plant-15% fishmeal diet were significantly smaller than fish in the other dietary groups. However, partly-hydrolysed protein supplementation allowed fish to grow as well as fish fed the control 35% fishmeal diet. Fish fed the FPH diets (diets C and D) had significantly higher levels of amino acids in their blood, including 48% and 27% more branched chain amino acids compared to fish on the 35% fishmeal diet, respectively. Plant protein significantly altered gut microbial composition, significantly decreasing α-diversity. Spirochaetes and the families Moritellaceae, Psychromonadaceae, Helicobacteraceae and Bacteroidaceae were all found at significantly lower abundances in the groups fed 80% plant protein diets compared to the control fishmeal diet.

Los valores de CEA obtenidos fueron menores al 0.76 reportado por Parisi et al (2004) para trucha arcoíris (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum). Esta diferencia se puede deber a que estos autores sacrificaron a la trucha arcoíris con un golpe en la cabeza inmediatamente después de someterse a narcosis (aturdimiento) con agua y hielo, lo cual produce un mínimo de estrés en los peces en comparación al shock térmico de agua con hielo al que se sometieron las tilapias en el presente estudio.…”

Se evaluó el efecto de tres niveles de sustitución de proteínas de origen animal por vegetal sobre la condición fisiológica de la tilapia del Nilo Oreochromis niloticus. Para ello, se formularon alimentos experimentales con 0, 50 y 100% sustitución de proteína animal por proteína vegetal. Los alimentos tuvieron un 37% de proteína y un contenido calórico de 17.6 kJ/g. Para la sustitución se utilizó una mezcla de harinas de soya, trigo, maíz y sorgo. El efecto de los alimentos se evaluó en un bioensayo de 60 días, suministrando diariamente los alimentos a las 09:00, 13:00 y 17:00h. Para evaluar la condición fisiológica se cuantificó la concentración de ATP, carbohidratos totales, glucógeno y pH del tejido muscular. Asimismo, se calculó la carga energética adenilada (AEC) y se determinó la composición química de las dietas experimentales y del músculo. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que los niveles de sustitución de proteína de origen animal por proteína de origen vegetal, no afectaron (P <0.05) la condición fisiológica de las tilapias, por lo que la utilización de proteínas de origen vegetal representa una alternativa viable y con gran potencial comercial para cultivar tilapia y poder reducir los costos de producción ocasionados por el alimento.

Fish welfare, suffering and the perception of pain were debated, together with several factors reducing infra vitam welfare of farmed fish (genetic, environment, density, malnutrition, starvation, cataracts, deformities, vaccination side effects, transport, handling, confinement, crowding, harvesting, killing method). Behavioural and physiological stress responses were considered as indicators of welfare reduction. The effects of pre-slaughter management practices, and the most commonly used stunning/slaughtering methods on welfare and quality reduction of farmed fish were discussed. A number of indicators can be used to assess fish welfare-suffering, both in a scientific and practical context, such as behavioural, haematic, cellular, tissue post mortem fish stress and quality indicators, but none of them are optimal. The best strategy for a reliable assessment of fish welfare/suffering and their impact on product quality is a multidisciplinary approach that takes into account animal behaviour and the different biochemical and physiological ante mortem and post mortem processes involved: several components, all influenced in a similar way by the same condition, suggest real welfare and quality reduction.
