Effect of topical application of melatonin on serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and periodontal disease

Abstract: Background The present clinical trial study was designed to assess the effect of topical application of melatonin on serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with diabetes and periodontal disease in comparison with healthy controls. Material and Methods Serum levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and CRP by nephelometry by using the proper commercial kits in 30 patients with diabetes and periodonta… Show more

“…In the early stage of periodontal disease, the inflammatory response is localized only in the gingival tissue, but if left untreated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. Proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐6, and IL‐8, contribute to the development of periodontitis and can serve as markers to evaluate the success of periodontal therapy 29 , 30 . Based on the LPS and ligature‐induced rat periodontitis model, it was further determined that BTZ significantly reduced expression of TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐6, and IL‐8 in periodontal tissue (Figs.…”

“…In dentistry, researchers tried to take advantage of melatonin's effect to improve oral cavity health . The use of melatonin in treating periodontal disease is hopeful . It is physiologically present in saliva and in crevicular fluid; patients affected by periodontitis show a statistically significant reduction in salivary melatonin levels .…”
