Effect of Tool Pin Length on Microstructure and Mechanical Strength of the FSW Joints of Al 7075 Metal Sheets

Abstract: The Friction stir welding (FSW) is a complex process, depending on many factors: machine, clamping device, material and tools. Parameters that have a direct impact on the quality of the joint include the rotational speed, welding speed, clamping force, geometry and tool plunging depth. The paper presents the results of experimental studies concerning the effect of tool pin length on the microstructure and mechanical strength of joints of thin sheets made of Al 7075 alloy. A tool with an adjustable pin with con… Show more

“…From Figure 5 a–i, it can be seen that certain visible defects, such as hooks and kiss bonding, are present in various layers of the FSAM part which is identical to the findings reported by Yu Chen et al [ 39 ] and Wronska et al [ 40 ]. Since FSAM consist of multiple layers formed by repeated FSLW technique, the intricate nature of the material flow during this process leads to several types of flaws.…”

“…the main disadvantages of the resistance welding process of aluminum alloys include high energy consumption, sensitivity of the process to all kinds of surface contamination and risk of hot cracking. other factors influencing the formation of defects in welds are electrode wear and inaccurate process parameters [5,6].…”
