Effect of time and ultrasonic activation on ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid on smear layer removal of the root canal

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of time and the ultrasonic activation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in removing the smear layer of at root canal. A total of 60 bovine inferior incisors were transversely sectioned and instrumented; A smear layer was added in the root dentin surface. The specimen were then divided into six groups according to the following final irrigation protocols: Group (G) 1: conventional irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); G2: conventional irrigation with… Show more

“…The lack of difference is probably due to the enlargement of the root canals to ISO 70, but also to the length of only 16 mm and the curvature of about 30°. Studies about the antibacterial effect of sodium hypochlorite in combination with PUI vary in their results , probably because of different experimental designs, such as the application time . In this investigation, NaOCl with PUI was highly effective, which could be due to the previously discussed enlargement and the pretreatment of the specimens where smear layers were removed by EDTA prior to incubation.…”

“…to the whole buccal and lingual surfaces of all specimens in order to remove smear layer, then it was washed away with water and the surface was dried with mini sponge. (8) The prepared 40 surfaces were divided into two groups, 20 each according to the type of desensitizing agent received, The mesial half of each surface received the desensitizing material while the other half was left untreated as a control group knowing that EDTA was applied to both halves the treated and untreated of each buccal and lingual surfaces. Each group was subdivided into four subgroups (N=5), the first subgroup faced an abrasion challenge by A custom made machine that was built to simulate brushing technique (9,10) Fig.…”
