Effect of thermocycling on the durability of etch-and-rinse and self-etch adhesives on dentin

Abstract: The objective was to compare bond strengths of adhesives with/without thermocycling and to analyze the micromorphology of resindentin interfaces. Flat dentin surfaces were prepared and divided into eight groups to bond with four etch-and-rinse adhesives (Optibond FL, Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, Optibond Solo Plus, and Single Bond 2) and four self-etch adhesives (Clearfil SE Bond, Adper SE Plus, Clearfil S 3 Bond and Adper Easy Bond). Specimens were further divided into two subgroups subjected for with/ wit… Show more

“…Their application is user-friendly and less technique-sensitive [1]. They do not require separate conditioning [1][2][3][4]. Self-etch adhesive can be categorized according to the mechanism of clinical application into one-step, which is also called "all-in-one", or two-step self-etch adhesives [1,2,5].…”

“…Self-etch adhesive can be categorized according to the mechanism of clinical application into one-step, which is also called "all-in-one", or two-step self-etch adhesives [1,2,5]. The conventional dentin adhesives, which need a conditioning with 37% phosphoric acid, are etch-and-rinse bonding systems [3][4][5]. There is also a sub-classification according to the number of steps, which are provided in the application [6].…”

“…Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray Noritake Dental, Tokyo, Japan) has been shown to be one of the most reliable self‐etch adhesive systems , and is considered to be the gold standard for this category of adhesive systems . It offers high bond strength to tooth substrates in laboratory studies and shows promising results in clinical studies . In this study, it is used as representative of classic two‐step self‐etch adhesives.…”

“…The present study selected such aging method with 2000 cycles, because it is known that having too many cycles is not ideal for assessing composite resins. The selection of too many cycles may result in degradation due to higher thermal contraction, chemical degradation due to hot water accelerating the hydrolysis of the adhesive monomer, and stress in the resin-tooth structure interface due to fissure propagation along the interface [22].…”
