Effect of the Structure of Alkyl Salicylaldoxime on Extraction of Copper(II)

Abstract: Four kinds of alkyl salicylaldoxime (AS) were investigated to probe the effect of molecular structure on the extraction of Cu(II). With the augment of R groups, tert-octylsalicylaldoxime and nonylsalicylaldoxime have much stronger extraction ability for Cu(II) than salicylaldoxime and tert-butylsalicylaldoxime, which is consistent with the rise of hydrophobicity (Log P) of the extractants. The umbrella structure of the R group can endow tert-octylsalicylaldoxime with stronger steric-hindrance effect than nonyl… Show more

“…It is clear that the alkyl substituents are important in metal-ion extraction. ,, To deeply understand the interaction between metal ions and extractants and to explain the influence of alkyl substituents, a simplified extraction model was calculated with the density functional theory, as described in Section . The results are listed in Table .…”

“…This results in an overall increase in the mass transfer between two phases even at lower pHs, as shown in the Figure 1, while at high pHs, it remains relatively unchanged. This behavior may be due to the formation of solids or colloidal particles at high pH levels for oxime-based extractants [22]. It was also observed that an amount of crud accumulated during the tests, which increased with increasing extractant concentration at higher pH values [23].…”

“…The focus of this study was to create novel salicylaldoximes with new structures for Cu(II) extraction. Tert-octylsalicylaldoxime (TOSO) was successfully synthesized by the one-pot method in the laboratory ( Li et al, 2017 ). Moreover, its properties and extraction ability for Cu(II) were investigated using the extraction test.…”
