Effect of the masseter muscle injection of botulinum toxin A on the mandibular bone growth of developmental rats

Abstract: BackgroundThe objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of masticatory muscle injection of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) on the growth of the mandibular bone in vivo.MethodsEleven Sprague-Dawley rats were used, and BTX-A (n = 6) or saline (n = 5) was injected at 13 days of age. All injections were given to the right masseter muscle, and the BTX-A dose was 0.5 units. All of the rats were euthanized at 60 days of age. The skulls of the rats were separated and fixed with 10% formalin for micro-comput… Show more

“…These changes may occur in both experimental conditions and clinical situations. In the present study, 3.75 U of botulinum toxin A was injected in the left masseter muscle (2.5 U) and left temporal muscle (1.25 U) under general anesthesia with isoflurane based on the protocol reported in previous studies [9, 12].…”

“…Injection of BTX-A on the anterior belly of the digastric muscle showed favorable results on preventing relapse of anterior open bite after trauma [ 5 ]. BTX-A injection into the masticatory muscle in growing rats has shown changes in jaw bone morphology [ 21 ]. Based on these results, BTX-A injection has been used for preventing relapse after orthognathic surgery [ 22 ].…”

“…This study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of the Gangneung-Wonju National University, Gangneung, Korea (2016-24). The experimental design and detailed procedure was in accord to our previous publication [15]. Ten Sprague Dawley rats were used in this study and divided into control and experimental groups, with five rats being used in each group.…”

“…Soft tissue originated tensional force may induce appositional bone growth [13]. In contrast, reduced tensional force by BTX injection may result in reduced bone growth [14, 15].…”
