The use of petroleum-based plastics has raised environmental issues as more plastic waste enters and accumulates in the environment. It has led to the development of biodegradable plastics. Starch is one of the potential materials to make biodegradable plastic, but starch-based plastic has poor mechanical strength. Blending starch with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and lignin is expected to improve the mechanical properties of the plastic. Biodegradable plastic films from PVA/starch/lignin blends with glycerol as a plasticizer were prepared using an internal mixer for compounding and a hot press molding machine for film making. The percentage of lignin (2-10%), glycerol (25-65%), and mixing temperature (190-230 oC) were varied according to the three levels of the Box-Behnken design. The ANOVA evaluation revealed that glycerol had the most significant effect on the mechanical properties of the film. Then, three models for the estimation of tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear resistance were developed. As expected, the models satisfactorily predict the effect of all input variables on the response variables. The optimum conditions for preparing the film were acquired from the equations, namely 197.6 oC for the temperature, 10% for lignin, and 45.1% for glycerol. The biodegradable plastic prepared using the optimum conditions possessed a tensile strength of 8.46 ± 1.08 MPa, an elongation at break of 139.00 ± 8.59%, and a tear resistance of 69.50 ± 2.50 N/mm. Ora‐pro‐nobis mucilage (MOPN) was incorporated into starch films to improve their mechanical, chemical, and retrogradation properties. Films were made in four MOPN content (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) by casting. Films with added MOPN presented antioxidant capacity varying from 3.9% to 23.3%. Chemical cross‐links between starch and MOPN were observed in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrum, resulting in a reinforced network with the greater young modulus (0.02 Pa, control‐film, to 2.20 Pa, 30%‐MOPN), higher tensile strength (1.34 Pa, control‐film, to 4.38 Pa, 30%‐MOPN), and reduction in elongation (250.32%, control‐film, to 6.55%, 30%‐MOPN). Water vapor permeability did not differ statistically between films. In assays photodegradation, higher MOPN content exhibited less shrinkage of films over time and more loss mass in films during 28 days. FTIR spectrum showed that the films increased crystalline regions during storage, which resulted in stronger aggregation between aligned helices. In addition, water molecules were released which allowed a better alignment of the starch chains. Starch‐based films added MOPN can alternatively be used as active biodegradable packaging since it is able to form cohesive, flexible films and with antioxidant action. Furthermore, MOPN, especially 30% addition, reduces drastic changes in mechanical properties over time.

With respect to the explosion of single-use plastic packaging consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic, environmentally friendly substitutes are critically needful for sustainable development. Therefore, the present work focuses on the functional properties of bioplastic blends prepared through hot compressing molding of thermoplastic starch (TPS) and spent coffee grounds (SCG) in different ratios (0%-20% SCG) as the potential features of SCG were extensively employed in biocomposites for the first time. The insertion of dark brown SCG into TPS hindered UV transmission by 100% at 320 nm and 99.2% at 400 nm. Moreover, the samples with 15% and 20% SCG induced a surge in radical scavenging activity from 7.95% to over 92% at a concentration of 0.1 g/ml owing to the rich source of antioxidants in SCG. The lignin component and high carbon content also improved the thermal performance of TPS/SCG blends, enhancing thermal stability, delaying onset and maximum degradation temperatures, and achieving the HB rating in the UL-94 test. Compared to a pure TPS matrix, TPS blends incorporating up to 10% SCG exhibited improvement in elastic modulus without deterioration of tensile strength.
