RESUMOO objetivo deste estudo foi realizar revisão integrativa dos estudos brasileiros sobre a influência dos fatores ambientais no desenvolvimento global, motor e cognitivo. Procedeu-se à busca de artigos científicos nas bases SciELO e MEDLINE de 2004 a 2014, utilizando os descritores "desenvolvimento infantil", "child development" "environment" e "Brazil". Foram selecionados 38 estudos, segundo os critérios de inclusão e exclusão pré-estabelecidos. Os estudos foram desenvolvidos em diferentes regiões do Brasil e fazendo uso desde testes de triagem a diagnósticos. A maioria dos estudos estava relacionada a fatores de risco ou prevalência de atrasos. Aqueles que focaram na influência da qualidade ambiental no desenvolvimento infantil, ora analisaram o ambiente familiar, ora a creche. Conclui-se que há importante literatura para o embasamento de estudos de intervenção, ainda escassos. Além disto, há necessidade de estudos brasileiros que analisem a inter-relação dinâmica entre os ambientes vivenciados pela criança e sua influência no desenvolvimento infantil. ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to make an integrative review of the brazilian studies regarding the influence of environmental factors on global, cognitive and motor development. We searched for scientific articles in SciELO and MEDLINE from 2004 to 2014 using the key words "child development" "environment" and "Brazil." According to the established criteria for inclusion and exclusion, 38 studies were selected. The studies were conducted in different regions of Brazil using techniques that varied from screening to diagnostic tests. Most studies were related to risk factors or prevalence of delays. Those studies that focused on the influence of environmental quality on child development, either analyzed the family or the day care centers. We concluded that important literature for the foundation of intervention studies. Furthermore, there is a need for studies that analyze the dynamic interrelation between the environments experienced by the child and their influence on development.

ABSTRACT AIMS: To evaluate the acquisition of motor milestones in the first two years of life and the relationship between gross motor function and manipulation, cognition and language in infants who attend day care centers. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic sample of infants attending public and private day care centers in a city in southern Brazil. The Alberta Infant Motor Scale and the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development were used to assess the motor performance of each child. Descriptive statistics were used for the characterization of the sample and simple linear regression in three different age groups (group 1: between six and nine months; group 2: between 10 and 12 months; group 3: between 13 and 16 months) for the analysis of relationships between the variables gross and fine motor skills, cognition and language. RESULTS: We studied 63 infants between six and 16 months of age who did not present statistically significant differences in their biological and sociodemographic characteristics when the three stratified groups were compared. Most children did not acquire the developmental milestones in the period expected for their age group. There was correlation between the developmental scores, and the gross motor function was able to explain a large part of the variability in the fine motor function, cognition and language scores (R 2 ajust>0.5) over the first two years of life. CONCLUSIONS: The evaluated motor skills occurred generally late in the sample. The delay in the acquisition of gross motor milestones had an impact on the overall developmental skills, corroborating the influence of gross motor function in the other domains of development.KEY WORDS: infant development; motor skills; infant; child day care center.

ObjectiveRecent literature suggests that goal‐oriented and family‐based interventions in enriched environment have a beneficial effect on neuromotor and cognitive development. We aimed to examine the short‐term effects of SAFE (Sensory strategies, Activity‐based motor training, Family collaboration, and Environmental Enrichment) early intervention approach on motor, cognitive, speech and language, and sensory development in preterm infants.MethodsThe study's sample population consisted of 24 preterm infants with corrected ages between 9 and 10 months. Infants in the control group participated in the family training program in accordance with the neurodevelopmental therapy principles (NDT). Infants in the treatment group were included in the family training program according to the principles of the SAFE Early Intervention Approach. Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development‐Infant Scale (AHEMD‐IS), Test of Sensory Functions in Infants (TSFI), Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), and Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development III (Bayley III) were used to evaluate infants in both groups before and after 10 weeks of treatment (AHEMD‐IS). The Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale Short Form was used to assess the parents’ mental health (DASS‐SF).ResultsThe interaction effects (time × group) revealed significant differences for Bayley‐III cognitive and language scores, TSFI total score, and AHEMD‐IS total score in favor of the SAFE group (p < .05). However, there were no differences in Bayley‐III motor composite score, COPM Performance score, and COPM Satisfaction score between the interaction effects (time × group) of the groups (p > .05).ConclusionsSAFE early intervention approach improved cognitive, speech and language, sensory outcomes and provide enriched home environment in all domains when compared to NDT‐based home program. SAFE is a promising novel early intervention approach for preterm infants.
